Westmont grinds out win over West Shamokin

Updated on 06/10/2022

Sometimes, the best quality comes from quantity.

By the time that Tucker Kushner had crossed the goal line with the go-ahead touchdown late in Saturday’s District 6 Class AA quarterfinal at Trojan Stadium on the campus of Greater Johnstown High School, the Westmont Hilltop Hilltoppers had run 37 snaps in the second half compared to five by the West Shamokin Wolves.

The ball-control style helped fourth-seeded Westmont Hilltop snag a 16-12 win, and a date with top-seeded Ligonier Valley next week in a 6-AA semifinal.

Kushner, who rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries, was the Hilltoppers’ primary option in the second half, punishing the Wolves with 26 of those carries in the second half.

“Right side was getting some cave-ins and some good push,” Westmont Hilltop coach Pat Barron said. “We were having a little trouble on the left. We go with the hot hand, and Tucker was hot. While he was hot, Camden (Moors) was blocking hard, the line was digging in. I think the difference in the game was pad level in the second half.”

All of those factors led to the program’s first postseason win in 16 seasons.

“You want to get that stigma off,” Barron said. “The fans were hungry for a win. They really pushed us in for that final score. Just a credit to the community, the kids and the coaches. They did a fantastic job this week.”

Westmont Hilltop held the ball for 19 minutes and 31 seconds in the second half, but found itself behind soon after Brandon Kaesler booted a 28-yard field goal to put the Hilltoppers ahead 9-6.

West Shamokin’s Aaron Gray returned the ensuing kickoff to the Westmont Hilltop 36, where the two-play drive was capped off by a 32-yard dash by Jacob Szul. The West Shamokin conversion pass failed, leaving the score at 12-9.

“They had that many plays (in the second half),” West Shamokin coach Jon McCullough said. “We also scored in two plays. I don’t care if we score in one, or 15 … Whatever it takes.”

West Shamokin then warded off a 10-play drive that moved the ball to the Wolves’ 16 when Kaesler pushed a 33-yard field-goal attempt wide to the left. A three-and-out by West Shamokin gave possession back to the Hilltoppers, who steadily marched 57 yards in 10 plays with Kushner plowing in from the 4 to push Westmont Hilltop ahead to stay.

West Shamokin’s last-gasp drive ended with 19 seconds remaining when Gunnar Hockenberry picked off a Devin Fairman pass, one snap after Ian Valente broke up a deep pass intended for Szul.

“We do what we do,” Barron said. “Credit the defense for the big stand at the end. It’s about staying calm in pressure situations. Our kids rose above, and we’re moving on to a very tough opponent next week.”

The Hilltoppers, who also saw Moors rush for 80 yards on 21 carries, methodically marched down the field on their opening drive; scoring when Kushner punched the ball in from 3 yards away. Kaesler’s point-after kick was blocked, leaving the Hilltoppers’ lead at 6-0.

Following two drives that ended in punts, West Shamokin finally broke through when a four-play, 45-yard drive was finished off by Szul’s 4-yard burst.

A 35-yard scamper by Fairman on the opening play of the possession gave the Wolves a promising start on the short-field journey. Szul’s point-after try was blocked, keeping the score knotted at 6.

Two go-ahead attempts by the Hilltoppers were for naught as their first drive was halted by an interception by Szul with 3:31 left in the second quarter.

After forcing a three-and-out, Westmont Hilltop took the ball to the West Shamokin 18 before the clock ran out in the first half.

Fairman rushed for 79 yards to lead the Wolves, who ran 34 total plays compared to 74 by Westmont Hilltop.

“My concern was that we were getting worn down out there,” McCullough said. “That may have happened at the end.”

Moors scores four TDs in Westmont's win over Somerset

Updated on 06/10/2022

After a 1-3 start to the season, Pat Barron told his Westmont Hilltop football team that Saturday’s date with Somerset was a must-win game.

Not surprisingly, the Hilltoppers leaned heavily on their ground game and a powerful offensive line to get the job done.

Camden Moors scored four touchdowns as Westmont Hilltop beat Somerset 34-7 at Greater Johnstown’s Trojan Stadium.

“We challenged the guys on Monday and told them it was a must-win game,” Barron said. “They responded. They were hungry to show what they could do. The guys up front paved the way.”

Helped in part by a pair of Somerset penalties – including one on fourth down – Westmont (2-3) marched down the field on the opening possession of the game.

Ian Valente scored the first touchdown of the game, a 1-yard run with 4:13 left in the first. Brandon Kaesler’s kick was good to make it 7-0.

After a defensive stop, the Hilltoppers took over at Somerset’s 40-yard line.

Morgan Bell got the ball back for Somerset (2-3) by recovering a Lee Santee fumble.

The Eagles carried the ball to Westmont’s 20-yard line, but Eagles quarterback Camron Coddington was intercepted by Valente, who returned it 42 yards into Somerset territory.

Nine plays later, Moors scored the first of his four touchdowns – this one from 3 yards out.  Kaesler’s kick made it 14-0 with 4:36 left in the second quarter.

Another failed drive by Somerset gave the Hilltoppers the ball at their 35-yard line. Five plays into the drive, Moors ran the ball in again and Kaesler’s kick put Westmont up 21-0 at halftime.

Austin Hemminger gave the Golden Eagles an opportunity to get back into the game when he ran 61 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Jordan Flitcraft’s kick made it 21-7.

That was all Somerset managed against Westmont’s stingy defense.

“The defense played outstanding,” Barron said. “Our defensive coordinator, our coaches, and our kids did a wonderful job.”

A failed onside kick attempt by Somerset, gave the Hilltoppers the ball near midfield.

After runs of 15 and 28 yards by Moors, he finished the drive with 6-yard scoring run.

The extra-point attempt failed, leaving the score at 27-7 with 5:40 remaining in the third quarter.

Moors’ fourth touchdown of the game came also in the third on a 7-yard run.

Somerset coach Bob Landis said his team needs to improve on defense and offense.

“We need to get consistency on both sides of the ball, work on our techniques, and get back to work,” Landis said.

The Hilltoppers will head to Bedford next week, while the Eagles will host Greater Johnstown.

Hilltoppers, Valente grind out high-scoring win over Forest Hills

Updated on 06/10/2022

Punch and counterpunch was the theme of the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference game between Westmont Hilltop and Forest Hills on a hot Saturday afternoon at Greater Johnstown’s Trojan Stadium.

But the physical Hilltoppers line and the running trio of Ian Valente, Camden Moors and Brock Bennett proved to be the undoing for the Rangers.

Westmont Hilltop defeated Forest Hills 45-34 – the first time since 2000 that the Hilltoppers achieved that feat.

“It was hot today and we knew the elements were going to be tough, but these kids were tough and they just kept fighting and grinding,” Westmont Hilltop coach Pat Barron said. “I think we threw one pass today and those big boys up front, they handled the job. Our offensive line was the reason we were successful today.”

Valente, who led the way for the Hilltoppers with 283 yards on 22 carries, said it was nice to get the first win under their belts.

“We’ve been working all summer and we felt that we were disrespected sort of by the newspaper after we went 7-3 last year and were predicted at 3-7,” Valente said.

“My line was great today, they were shoving kids out of the way and opening up holes for me. Honestly, I went through two hip surgeries and I want to give all the glory to God for that, because without him, it wouldn’t have happened.”

Moors finished with 16 carries for 111 yards and Bennett tacked on another 44 on six carries. Valente had five touchdowns while Bennett and Moors added one each.

“We couldn’t stop them, they just overpowered us up front,” Forest Hills coach Don Bailey said. “We didn’t tackle very well.”

On the Forest Hills side of the ball, sophomore quarterback Adam Cecere threw for 209 yards going 13 of 21. Jon Long had nine receptions for 155 yards, but the Rangers struggled to move the ball on the ground, finishing with just 91 yards.

“Jon Long and Adam Cecere had great games, but we’ve got to have more than just two guys,” Bailey said. “We’ve got to get more people involved.”

After Forest Hills went three and out on their opening drive, the Hilltoppers took over and Valente broke free for a 50-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.

The Rangers responded with a three-play drive, capped by a 50-yard Cecere pass to Long.

Back came Westmont Hilltop with a possession which started near midfield and ended with a 30-yard Bennett dash.

The pendulum swung back to Forest Hills, which put together it’s longest drive of the afternoon, a 10-play series capped by a 13-yard pass from Cecere to Long.

The first quarter ended with the teams tied at 12.

Westmont Hilltop added two more scores in the second quarter on Valente runs of 23 and 33 yards and Brandon Kaesler added an extra point kick, one of three for the day.

Just before halftime, the Rangers put together a seven-play drive ending with a 14-yard reception to Long from Cecere. Cecere added the conversion pass to Evan Kundrod to pull Forest Hills to 25-20 at the half.

The Hilltoppers opened the third quarter with a 10-play drive which consumed almost six minutes with Moors scoring from the 5 to give Westmont Hilltop a 32-20 advantage.

Again the Rangers battled back, with an eight-play series that ended with a 28-yard pass from Cecere to Long along with a Cecere conversion run to cut the Hilltoppers lead to 32-28.

An onside kick returned possession to Forest Hills, which recovered the ball at midfield and then drove down the field ending with a 30-yard scoring strike to Long as the Rangers forged ahead 34-32.

But the fourth quarter belonged to the Hilltoppers, with a pair of Valente touchdowns for 10 and 5 yards, and a number of defensive stands which included quarterback sacks by Justin Bulas and Bennett which kept Forest Hills off the board.

“We tried just about everything with three or four different defenses and knew what they were doing, we just couldn’t stop it,” Bailey said.

The Hilltoppers are at Bishop Guilfoyle next Saturday night while the Rangers play host to Somerset on Friday.
